WELCOME TO OUR NEW HEAD COACH
A FAMILIAR FACE IN A NEW ROLE
Well known to us all at Trefecca Road, David ‘Dai’ Roberts is a local boy who attended Llyswen Primary then Gwernyfed High School. He went on to study at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He now works for Western Power.
He and his partner Deborah have three children Evan, Bronwen and Freya. Dai coaches our Under 11s and is also Chairman of the Mini & Junior Section of the Club.
What brought you to Gwernyfed RFC?
I went to school in Llyswen and joined the club as a 7 year old.
How did you get involved with Rugby?
Can’t remember, as a kid it was probably introduced by my parents to tire me out!
What are your best moments on/off the Rugby Field?
Winning as an “Under-dog”. As a Club, Gwernyfed have often been under-estimated.
What are the most embarrassing or funniest things that have happened to you on or off the rugby pitch?
That stays within the changing room! The end of season ‘changing room’ drinks are always “entertaining!”
What is your greatest achievement in life?
My Family.
You have agreed to be part of our Coaching set up. What experience can you bring?
I have been part of the winning and losing teams and I think I can help build the players into another Great Team.
How many games have you played at Senior Level and have you won any awards?
200 ish!
In your new role as Coach - what do you hope to achieve at GRFC?
I intend to help to ensure that Gwernyfed Rugby Club has a strong base going into the next 50 years.
What do you see as a typical Saturday experience?
A good breakfast, then prep for the game. I struggle to think about anything else before a game. Then, after the game (when I was playing) struggling to walk from either pain or Strongbow in the evening!
How do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy running, cycling, coaching with the Mini and Junior teams and spending time with my kids.
In six words - how would you describe yourself?
Hungry, thirsty, tall, excitable, committed, intense.
Is there anything else you would like to say to the players, sponsors and supporters?
I would just like to say thankyou to everyone who helps with making the Club run. It takes a huge effort and without the volunteers, players and sponsors the great club wouldn’t be able to give all it does to the Community.
