50th ANNIVERSARY TOURNAMENT
Last year, as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations we at the Mini and Junior section held our first ever mini rugby tournament. It was a resounding success.
We must have had the best ever weather in September, with a huge number of parents and children participating in the day. We had a massive support from coaches, parents and sponsors in organising the event. Teams from Brecon, Abergavenny, Monmouth, Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells all came to play. The whole day went without a hitch, apart from two ambulances turning up, with rugby being played in the spirit that is expected from the WRU and enjoyed by all players and parents. All the children left with a medal and a big smile. We are now in the process of repeating last year’s successful event in September - we hope to have another fantastic day.

SUCCESSFUL SCHOOLS RUGBY FESTIVAL
On the 24th April, the weather stayed dry for the 8th Annual Festival of Rugby to take place in Talgarth.
The festival, was organised by Nicola Jones, the 5x60 Development Officer for Powys, she was supported by Dyfed-Powys School Community Police Officer PC Mike Eckley who saw primary school children from the Talgarth area coming together for a day of rugby skills.
Each year, all the Primary Schools in the locality are actively encouraged to get involved and this year, the event saw around 150 children from five schools taking part in the skills day. Children from year’s 3 to 6 from Bronllys, Clyro, Llyswen, Llangorse, and Talgarth schools took part.
In the morning, the children enjoyed skills sessions such as rugby rounders, which was led by pupils from Gwernyfed High School – many of whom would have taken part in previous years themselves. The Gwernyfed students did a fantastic job of coaching the primary aged children, encouraging them and teaching them skills to help them in the afternoon.
The pitch was then split into three games; two years 5 and 6 pitches and one year 3 and 4 pitch, where the children took part in seven-a-side games to showcase what they had learnt. It was an opportunity for parents and grandparents to see their children and grandchildren in action - supporting each other and cheering each other on.
After each team had played five games each, the winners were chosen. Llyswen Primary years 5 and 6 were winners of the Dyfed Powys Police Shield; Clyro years 5 and 6 were winners of the Healthy Schools Shield and Llangorse years 3 and 4 were winners of the Lower Keystage 2 Competition. Students from each year were also chosen for the Fairplay Awards - rewarding them for their dedication to the festival.
PC Mike Eckley said; “The day just gets better and better. This is the 8th time we’ve run this day, which is all about making new friends and using sport as a positive citizenship vehicle within the community. Hopefully this is the first step to guide children into sport and away from anti-social behaviour. Many thanks to Gwernyfed RFC for their support and the use of their pitches.”
