Unit 1: You and Your Equipment 1.1: Eye of the Photographer
We chose the first image on the third slide because we think its composition is different from your typical Grand Canyon snapshot.
• The low camera angle puts a patch of cracked, barren-looking ground in the foreground that adds to the majestic, space-age landscape.
• The tree to the right of center in the frame makes the composition more visually appealing than it would be if it were plopped down in the center. And it’s
interesting to observe how the tree seems to grow out of the rock.
• The majestic peaks of the canyon in the background add to the drama of the landscape, but they aren’t the first things you look at.
This is a layered photograph, because of the way the ground, the mountains, and the sky come together. And these layers create a sense of depth which gives the viewer an appreciation for the immense size of the Grand Canyon.
