And then are two of my favs. Those who pitch trash, es- pecially cigarette butts out of their cars or those who leave garbage, including large pieces of furniture, on the side of the street figuring someone will pick it up. “Feng shui-ing” the neighborhood?
But there are courteous people on the other side of the aisle too. We all have had service people at the house, or of- fice, who seem to go out of their way to do an exemplary job at whatever they are doing. Word of mouth is the best adver- tising. Assistants at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Publix can not only tell you what aisle an item is on but will often walk you there. I’ve had wonderful sellers on eBay who go the extra mile in explaining the details of an item or getting it shipped expeditiously. Sometimes servers at restaurants will tell you that what you’d like to eat might not be the best choice that night, or if you make an honest complaint about a meal, it of- ten will not show up on your bill. How can you not appreciate that? Elke went to Walgreen’s for a prescription, and it was going to cost about $100. The pharmacist said she’d try run- ning it through the Walgreen’s discount card, and it turned out to be almost half the price. The pharmacist didn’t have to do that, but Elke was very appreciative. And my favorite example of courtesy is our neighbor, who, when asked, didn’t hesitate to take care of our plants and cat when we went on vacation. Just like you know who your best friends are when you ask for help moving, so too is asking someone to clean out your cat’s litter box.
And we can all practice more courtesy in our practices (well, not me anymore) by listening to patients. Let them talk; don’t interrupt. As the Father of Medicine, Sir William Osler, said, probably 150 years ago, “Listen to your patient; he is telling you the diagnosis.” It still holds true.
Beginning with the Spring 2025 edition of The Bulletin (March 2025), our journal will become 100% digital. The Fall and Winter 2024 editions will be the last two printed publications.
Bulletin Editor, Dr. David Lubin, will discuss the changes in his “Editor’s Page,” in the Winter 2024 edition.
