In Memoriam
Gerry Gutierrez was born on February 22, 1923 and passed away on her birthday this year. Mrs. Gutierrez, whose husband was Dr. Albert R. Gutierrez, served as Presi- dent of the HCMA Alliance in 1982, but she did not stop there. She also served as Par- liamentarian, and was very active in mul- tiple Alliance endeavors including “Breast Cancer Awareness.” She lead Alliance mem-
bers as they distributed pamphlets, taught young women how to perform self-exams, and assisted uninsured individuals to find care at free clinics. Mrs. Gutierrez was instrumental in making arrangements with Sears and Kmart to help mastectomy patients with fittings for undergarments. Another project dear to her heart was the Evelyn Shaver Scholarships which awarded schol- arships to students studying in medical fields. Mrs. Gutierrez is survived by her four children and their families, many of whom are in the medical field, which made her very proud. Alejandro Jose Aguilar, MD, 90, passed peacefully on the morning of April 19, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Dr. Agui- lar was born in Managua, Nicaragua. At the age of 28, he came to the United States with his bride by his side to pursue a successful career in Urology. He was a member of The Hillsborough County Medical Association, American Medical Association, American
College of Surgeons, American Urology Association, Southeast- ern Urological Medical Association, St. Joseph Cancer Com- mittee; former Professor of Urology at Tampa General Hospital, Charter member of the Bay Area Renal Stone Center, a founder of the Latin American Medical Society, Paul Harris Fellow of the Ybor City Rotary Club, and a Knight of the Krewe of Sant’ Yago. Upon retirement from his medical practice at the age of 70, Dr. Aguilar pursued his hobby of drawing religious figures which he gifted to many family and friends. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Nydia; and their children, grandchildren, great- grandsons, family, friends, and colleagues. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in his name to Christ the King Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Krewe of Sant’Yago Educa- tion Foundation.
Governor appoints Dr. Wasylik to the Board of Medicine
Dr. Michael Wasylik, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in Tampa has been ap- pointed to the Florida Board of Medicine. An HCMA member since 1975, Dr. Wasylik served as president of the HCMA in 2000. He also served on the Board of Trustees, Managed Care Committee, HCMA Delega- tion to the FMA, and served as president
of the HCMA Foundation for many years. Dr. Wasylik is also a member of the FMA, AMA, Florida Orthopaedic Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Resident reception at DelFrisco’s
On April 22nd the HCMA and Benefit Provider, Jensen An- derson/Physicians Wealth Management hosted a social for USF and Brandon Regional Hospital senior residents who are plan- ning to remain in the area.
