Rose Eken, Belladonna 2021 Glazed paperclay, 70 x 52 x 40 cm
Well-known for her meticulous- and colorful everyday objects in glazed paper clay, presented at national- and international art institutions for more than a decade, the new floral studies by Rose Eken (b. 1976, DK) are inspired by folklore, fantasy and ecofeminism.
“In folklore and fantasy, an enchanted forest is a forest under, or containing, enchantments. Bellad-onna or Deadly Nightshade (2021), from Italian “beautiful woman”, perhaps one of the most well-known plants from the witch’s garden with her deep reddish-black berries, gives you sweet, erotic dreams, which every now and then shows you a glimpse of the future. Related to the gods of deep sleep, Morpheus and Hypnos, the poison of the plant can put you into a sleep so deep that you risk never waking up again.” (Dannie Druehyld, “Heksens Håndbog”, 1987)
The works shown at CHART Art Fair (2021) are presented as a prelude to Rose Eken’s solo exhibi-tion, “And the Forests Dream Eternally”, at Eighteen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
