 Tal R: Girl smoking, 2014.
Line etching rolled color, 43.5 x 37 cm. Edition 10/24.
Tal R is one of the most acknowledged contemporary artists in Denmark. He works primarily with painting as material, but he also creates sculptures, installations, drawings, and prints. Girl smoking is part of a large print series the artist created for three years while he was a professor at the art academy in Düsseldorf. Here, he invited a group of women – some he knew, and some were strangers – to pose naked for him while they smoked cigarettes. In the series, Tal R investigates the awkward and strange meetings between people – a theme he delves into through many artistic contexts. Tal R generally works with an expressionistic, sensual, and intuitive approach to motif and color. He creates a naive and nostalgic atmosphere in his motifs that have previously consisted of themes such as still life, bars, streets, and sex shops.
Tal R (1967, IL) lives and works in Copenhagen. He has exhibited his works at numerous national and international venues, and he is represented in collections worldwide, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, US; Berlinische Galerie Museum of Modern Art, DE; Centre Pompidou, FR; Hammer Museum, US; K11 Art Foundation, CN; Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, DK; Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, FI; Moderna Museet Stockholm, SE; The National Gallery of Denmark, DK, among others. He has received recognitions such as the Eckersberg Medal and The New Carlsberg Foundation’s Artist Award.
