Stage 3: The Learning Process
The Prompt, Curiosity & Knowledge
Being able to be an independent, lifelong learner provides a strong foundation for living and adapting to life as it changes and morphs as we age. We are all learners and there will be times when we will struggle with the illusion that we cannot learn or that we are not intelligent. There are many reasons for this, and sometimes it is the most outwardly confident learner who can have the greatest fear of failure. Never assume that the confident learner does not have fears about their capacity to learn. The illusions we live with about our learning are sometimes hard to see. Is the picture below a natural arch or is there a lake in the foreground? It is only when we interrogate our beliefs and have those ‘difficult conversations’ with ourselves, that we can realistically assess our abilities, motives and capabilities, especially regarding our ability to learn.
It is time we shattered the illusion that there are just the few that are intelligent. That has never been the truth and it never will be, but that truth will only be unleashed if we, as educators, do our job. It is our job to bring about this reality to every learner in every corner of the Earth. Restoring dignity comes in many forms and we can no longer afford to judge anyone, whatever their status, intellect, culture or beliefs by what we assume to be true.
