The Learning Process -
Developmental Levels
The Learning Process is a dynamic process which cycles through many levels and phases. As part of this research, the Learning Process is presented in three developmental levels of sophistication. Direct observations of the learner’s capability should guide the educator to when the learner should be challenged to move on to the next level of sophistication of the Learning Process. Learners will move back and forth between building knowledge and making meaning until they have the understanding that they require to begin to apply that understanding. 158
The Learning Process: Level 1
The first phase159 of level 1 of the Learning Process requires learners to be inspired to feel one or more emotions via a prompt in some form and this initiates questions from the learners. The emotions that they feel engage their curiosity and this sparks that initial desire for knowledge. Learners ‘build additional knowledge’ that they almost immediately start questioning. In this approach the learners only access knowledge as the need it – Just in Time. By working in teams, learners can pool their knowledge and question each other about the knowledge that each member of the team has been sourced as to its reliability, relevance and credibility.
