Each school’s purpose statement for education can now be created by drawing on the thoughts and feelings of their communities, staff and experts, as well as from the six pillars that were identified in the previous chapter. It should be noted that we have maybe 5-10 years to carry out these transitions before we become almost completely irrelevant.
Schools need to develop a strategic plan surrounding how they build the capability of staff to make these transitions. What is required is a learning journey that must be taken on by the entire school as a team of educators, ensuring that our young people have the capability sets that they require to be successful in a complex world. Some countries have already formed structures that can facilitate this type of professional learning, but most have not. This resource is an attempt to make public the scale of the transitions that are now required, along with some theoretical frameworks that may enable those countries that take the initiative, to prepare their young people for this emerging world they will live in. If we can pass these capability sets on to our learners, they will enter society with the confidence and with the capabilities this century now demands.
A framework for a purpose statement is below as an example BUT it is a framework that should be interrogated and aligned to your community’s needs and the opportunities that you see lay ahead.
Our Purpose as educators ... is to ensure that our learning institutions empower learners with the capability to learn efficiently and effectively via the acquisition of the competencies and the ability to creatively apply the Learning Process. The outcome should be that every learner has the capacity to innovatively and ingeniously solve the challenges and leverage the opportunities, we face both individually and collectively. As the dominant species on Earth, we will promote equity in all aspects of our lives and acknowledge our responsibility to protect all species and our mutually shared environments.
