What we sense depends on what we are looking for, as the video clip below quite clearly shows. Our senses collect the raw material that is filtered through our worldview and we use that modified dataset to create our new understanding. Hence, from the very beginning of the Learning Process we are working with a tainted worldview. It is no wonder then, that when a group of people all describe the same event everyone has a different view of what they thought took place.39
Resource 8: Selective Attention
Each of our four+1 learning systems relies on sensory data, as the raw material that our brain then weaves together with existing knowledge, ideas and concepts, as well as emotions and feelings,40 allowing us to make sense of our world. Learning should rely on our senses being accurate, but what we are starting to realise is just how much of an assumption that is.
