7.3. Mixed and Complex Rational Expressions
A mixed rational expression is a sum or difference of a polynomial and a rational expression. For example,
2π₯ π₯+1
is a mixed expression because it is comprised of the difference between a monomial and a
7 β
rational expression.
When a rational expression has more than one fraction either in the numerator or the denominator, the expression is called a complex expression.
For example,
π₯+1
π₯ is a complex expression. π₯β1
π₯
In other words,
π Γ· π = π Γ π  = ππ
π π  π π ππ Here, q =ΜΈ 0 and r =ΜΈ 0
  Worked Example
    π₯β3
Simplify π₯2β16 π₯2β9
π₯+4
 Solution:
 π₯β3 = π₯2β16 π₯2 β9
π₯+4
 = π₯β3 Γ·π₯2β9 π₯2β16 π₯+4
 = π₯β3 Γ π₯+4 π₯2β16 π₯2β9
 = π₯β3 Γ π₯+4 (π₯β4)(π₯+4) (π₯β3)(π₯+3)
     =1 (π₯β4)(π₯+3)
