Combining Reflection and Translation
REMEMBER:
Sketch the graph of y = (x + 2)2 – 5
Solutions:
If the function is y = x2
y = (x + 2)2
It’s of the form y = f(x + h), the graph shifts left by 2 units.
f(x) = (x + 2)2
f(x) = x2
Now y = (x + 2)2
And y = (x + 2)2 – 5
The graph is of the form y = f(x) – h.
So, you shift the graph vertically downwards by 5 units.
