FOSTER A CULTURE OF GROWTH
Literacy Helps Students
Participate in Their World
E ective listening, speaking, and reasoning skills are vital in today’s workplaces. Into Literature focuses on productive interactions to help students develop their abilities for successful collaboration and communication.
Developing a Strength for Communication
Build listening and speaking skills through embedded prompts and practice in every unit. Close Read Screencast videos provide a model
of active listening and conversation in relation to reading selection prompts. As students work to re ne their skills, Interactive Lessons in the Speaking and Listening Studio allow for self-paced study of Participating in Discussions, Speaking Constructively, and more.
Facilitating the Art of Collaboration
Throughout the unit, students learn the true meaning of teamwork as they participate in a variety of small-group activities, ranging from setting group goals and norms to creating a podcast and participating in a formal debate. In each unit’s Writing Task, students evaluate a classmate’s work and learn to accept feedback on their own work during a peer review cycle.
Enabling Courage for Presentation
Each unit’s summative Speaking and Listening Task explicitly teaches
the skills needed to successfully present ideas to a large group. A comprehensive guide, including verbal and nonverbal techniques, ensures that every student grows in this often overlooked but critical area.
