FOUNDATIONAL MATH INTERVENTION, GRADES 1–5
Do The Math® Help students build numerical reasoning for success.
Created by Marilyn Burns, Do The Math® is a modular math intervention program that rebuilds students’ critical mathematical foundations. Students develop an understanding of key concepts and skills with whole numbers and fractions—the essentials necessary for students to succeed in higher-level mathematics. Do The Math:
• Includes concrete materials and games to help students develop understanding
• Provides teacher-facilitated lessons with built-in di erentiated instruction
• Emphasizes language development through literature, visual models, and games
• Extends opportunities for students to explore alternate ways of reasoning and solving
problems
EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH
Do The Math represents Marilyn Burns’s body of work in teaching and learning mathematics. The program incorporates eight instructional strategies drawn from research including: scaffolding content, explicit instruction, multiple strategies, gradual release, student interaction, meaningful practice, vocabulary and language, and assessment and differentiation. ASSESSMENT AND PROGRESS MONITORING
Do The Math includes embedded progress monitoring, as well as formative and summative assessments, to allow teachers to continuously evaluate student understanding and monitor their progress.
• Beginning-of-Module Assessments—Students complete the online assessment as a pre- module snapshot of what they know.
• Formative Assessment—Daily observations give students the prompt attention that will enable them to complete math assignments successfully.
• Middle-of-Module Assessments—This digital assessment may be administered after Lesson 15.
• Progress Monitoring—Every fifth lesson is an opportunity to monitor student progress with Show What You Know.
• End-of-Module Assessments—This online assessment measures student growth when compared with the performance of the Beginning-of-Module Assessment.
FLEXIBLE IMPLEMENTATION
Do The Math is organized into 13 sca olded modules that can be used for core instruction in numerical reasoning, pull-out intervention, or extended day settings. Each module includes a series of thirty 30-minute lessons. The modular design gives the program the exibility to span multiple grade levels.
