8. The Student Activities Office will send out a written evaluation form after each dance event to the student leaders and to the College staff member(s) planning, attending, and overseeing the event.
9. The Vice President for Student Development will organize a Community Covenant debriefing meeting at the end of each year and include dance as a point of reflection.
Dance can be fun, healthy and glorifying to God and Wheaton College wants to encourage an appreciation for and a godly use of this gift he has given. Please approach the Dean for Student Engagement if you have questions about the social dancing and dance event guidelines, whether of a philosophical or practical nature.
Song Selection Guidelines and Procedures:
While referenced briefly in the “Campus Musical Programming Guidelines” section above and the dance policy below, music selection is worthy of further reflection. As such, here is an elaboration on discerning song selection for college owned space and college sponsored events (including dances, concerts, public spaces, etc...)
Music is a gift from God to be enjoyed and celebrated. Through the beauty of music, we can better understand God, others, and ourselves—whether the song is explicitly Christian or not. Unfortunately, as with many things, inasmuch as music can aid our pursuit of Christian faithfulness, so too can it detract from it. Song selection for the Christian, then, is a practice of discernment. Below are some guidelines for discerning the merits of a song to be played publicly on campus.
Consider, what does the song celebrate? Students and staff should avoid songs that encourage, promote, or celebrate the following:
• Misogyny and/or sexism
• Explicit or discriminatory language • Violence
• Drug or alcohol use
Consider, does the song help or hinder our community from upholding our Community Covenant? Here are some principles from the covenant to consider:
• The call to pursue holiness in every aspect of our thought and behavior (2 Cor. 7:1; 1 Thess. 4:7; Heb. 12:14; 1 Pet. 1:15–16)
• Followers of Jesus Christ will love and side with what is good in God’s eyes, and abhor what is evil in God’s eyes (Amos 5:15; Rom. 12:9, 16:19)
• Scripture condemns the following: Injustice, prejudice, immodesty in dress or behavior, vulgar or obscene language, blasphemy, greed and materialism, the taking of innocent life, illegal activities, selfish ambition, drunkenness, and sexual immorality
Song Selection Procedure:
• Each song played at a campus event or in a college owned space must be individually vetted. Students are responsible for an initial review of music, which in turn requires an advisor’s confirmation.
• All playlists for college sponsored dances must go through the Student Engagement Playlist Committee. The purpose of the Student Engagement Playlist Committee is to bring a broad spectrum of students together to create an inclusive, diverse, and content appropriate playlist to be
