Follow a group of mountain gorillas through the dense, steep jungle of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest; join researchers at the Ngogo Chimpanzee project for insights into the largest known and most studied chimpanzee community on Earth; and, for the very first time, witness Savannah elephants getting their dose of salt – from inside the dark and mysterious caves at the bottom of an ancient volcano’s crater. Back for second series, ‘Wildest Survival’ is heading to new extreme locations to explore the rich and varied world of animal behaviour. For wild animals, life is all about survival. To overcome nature’s toughest challenges, every species on earth has evolved its own unique anatomy, and learnt amazing tricks and behaviours to help them stay alive. When the world presents extreme challenges that seem impossible to surmount, some surprising species rise to the challenge.
To many life-forms, the border between land and sea is an invaluable habitat. From cliffs to tide pools, from reefs to sand dunes - all are home to members of the animal kingdom. It is an environment of extremes where seal colonies take advantage of the cool waters and the fish that congregate here. The seals attract predators, but the surrounding cliffs make an attack by predators unlikely. Some animals spend all of their lives here. But not all.

In 1956, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas, 23-year- old, Anne Innis Dagg, travelled to South Africa becoming the first person in the world to study animal behaviour in the wild. Returning home a year later armed with ground-breaking research, the barriers Anne faced as a female scientist proved hard to overcome and in 1972 Anne transformed into a feminist activist. Anne was missing from the world of giraffes until 2010 when she was headhunted by giraffologists and not just brought back into the fold but also finally celebrated for her work. Now, Anne takes us on her first expedition back to Africa to retrace her footsteps. ‘The Woman Who Loves Giraffes’ offers an intimate look into Anne’s life as a young woman, juxtaposed with a first-hand look at the devastating reality that giraffes are facing today.
