‘Smiling Elephant’ follows Dutch elephant researcher Antoinette van de Water who, with the support of the University of Miami, has committed herself to reducing the human - elephant conflict in Thailand. As the habitat of wild elephants shrinks due to human population growth and increasing farmland, human and elephant conflict is a serious problem. After years of struggling to save domestic elephants and failing, Antoinette undertakes a project to keep the elephants away from farmland with the use of new and innovative techniques. Join Antoinette as she embarks on a brave new quest which takes her to Thailand and Africa to help save the elephant and human conflict.
From fur to feathers, from scales to shells, every creature has some form of characteristic outer layer. This not only determines the outward appearance of the creature, but also serves a number of different purposes that ensure both, the survival of the individual life-form, and the species as a whole. It is often said that one should never judge a book by its cover, but that is exactly what this film does, exploring how the different types of outer shells in the animal kingdom have evolved over millions of years. Blind Date for apes? It started out as a crazy idea to help the world’s rarest gibbon, the Skywalker Gibbon, find the perfect mate. Now, males and females, sight unseen, are making bonds for life. Here is the extraordinary story of a rock star and a scientist who set out to save a disparate group of gibbons through love, imagination and song. The Skywalker Gibbon was only described by scientists in 2017. There are just a handful left, sparsely scattered throughout the spectacular Gaoligong Mountains on the China-Myanmar border. Like all gibbons they find their mates by singing to one. But the Skywalker Gibbons live so far apart that their songs are lost to the forests and valleys of their remote home, never reaching their potential partners. Doom for the lonely apes, doom for their kind. Enter Beijing pop star Musician Xingyu Lee, and Skywalker Gibbon expert Professor Fan. They have built a sophisticated outdoor sound system of speakers and microphones to connect Gibbons living vast distances apart. It’s like a giant karaoke experience for apes. Follow the bold experiment and meet the extraordinary contestants and their families! Filmed over two years in one of the world’s most challenging locations, ‘A Song for Love – An Ape with an App’ is a wonderful tale of hope, and features never before seen behavior of the elusive Skywalker Gibbon.
