NEVERTHELESS, NOT AS I WILL
They had not been used to praying over time. It was easy for their flesh to submit to the pressures of the powers of darkness because they were nor spiritually strong. They could, therefore, not rise up to the challenge of praying at such short notice despite the crucial nature of the trial brought against them. The fact that they had advance knowledge offered by Jesus could also not help their situation. If they had become accustomed to praying, their experience would have produced a different result.
In the ‘day of trouble,’ such as what both Jesus and His disciples respectively encountered, what typically matters are the things that we had done ahead of that day. This is how Psalm 20 expresses the nature of the deliverance that God offers in the ‘day of trouble,’
Psalm 20:1-4 NKJV
May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble; May the name of the God of Jacob defend you; [2] May He send you help from the sanctuary, and strengthen you out of Zion; [3] May He remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah [4] May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, And fulfill all your purpose.
Note that the “offerings” and “burnt sacrifice” are remembered on that day as a key consideration for offering deliverance to the
