obviously believed that they knew enough from following and observing Him, and perhaps all He had taught them up to that point, to be able to handle the situation. He chastised them, referring to them as a “faithless and perverse generation.” However, that situation challenged the disciples who later sought to understand from the Master why they could not cast the demon out. It eventually presented them a learning opportunity that empowered them against future situations. Jesus told them that their faith was lacking but most importantly, situations like the one they faced required fasting to be added to their praying.
In Hebrews 12:5-6, Paul focused on that same issue of chastening of the Lord. He pointed out that it was not to be despised and it was actually a demonstration of the Father’s love toward the son.
And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.”
