       Salem Common
In 1637, the first muster took place on the Common, marking Salem as the birthplace of the National Guard. By 1805 an archway decorated with a carving of George Washington by Samuel McIntire was added to the Common’s west entrance. Salem Common’s cast iron fence was commissioned in 1850 and
the Colonial Revival bandstand, a favorite spot for wedding photos, was built in 1926. Today, Salem Common hosts community events like movie nights, street fairs, food festivals, and more.
