GIFTS & SOUVENIRS
        Mill Hill
Salem’s Mill Hill neighborhood encompasses present-day Gedney, Margin, Summer Streets, Riley Plaza, and some of the land around Canal Street. In the mid-19th century, the neighborhood was home to a small African-American community, including many of Salem’s sailing crews, a sought-after profession at the time because it offered the same pay as white crew members. Italian immigrants later called this neighborhood home, settling around St. Mary’s Italian Church on Margin Street in the 20th century.
