Blubber
Hollow
Salem’s “Blubber Hollow” is the neighborhood located near Harmony Grove Cemetery by the base of Gallows Hill. Its name is a nod to whale oil that was extracted here for the oils used in leather tanneries in the 18th and 19th centuries. Salem’s tanneries once employed about 1,000 workers at their peak, but several factors led to the industry’s decline and most of Salem’s production ended by 1920.
