former England international. In fact, he barely comes across as a former footballer. But there is a steel underneath the silk. He listens to people carefully, a rarer attribute than you might imagine. He thinks before he speaks, a trait that is practically unheard of in the media. You respect him. You want to him to like you, you want him to be your
friend, and you’d be absolutely terri ed of disappointing him.
That’s why I’m so pleased he’s returned. He’s not just a good manager. He’s a good man. And he’s going to make us proud.

Wjobs for the boys
ITH Chris Powell now at the Based purely on the fact that I once sold him
helm, Maher coaching the
youngsters and rumours of Ian Benjamin having a scouting role, it’s almost like the corridors of Roots Hall are littered with 90s legends. I wondered what other roles might
be be tting of some of
our other players from
back in the day...
Steve Tilson – Coach Driver
Who better to get you ‘there or thereabouts’ than good old Tilly?
Leo Roget – Dressing Room DJ
Roget is infamous for karate kicking Barnet’s stereo when they celebrated a bit too enthusiastically in the away team’s dressing room for his liking.
I have no idea what Roget’s taste in music is like but if that’s how he reacts when he hears something he doesn’t like I think it’s safer for everyone if we give him the controls.
Stan Collymore – Dog Walker
While the players train hard someone needs to look after their pets and make sure they get their daily exercise. Stan knows all the best parks to hang out at to get some really good exercise.
Trevor Fitzpatrick – Entertainment
a few games whilst working at Electronics Boutique in the High Street.
Fitz can dish out the Game Boys and make sure the players have something to do on those long away day coach trips.
Julian Hails – Statistician
No joke here just a fun bit of trivia. Julian now spends his time teaching mathematics at apostrophe minefield Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School.
Any modern football club needs a good stats man and Hails is the man for us.
Simon Royce – Kit Designer
I remember someone telling me once that goalkeepers get to choose their own kit. I think we can all agree that anyone who proudly opts to wears a Christmas jumper as a goalkeeper jersey deserves
to be given more responsibility when it comes to kits.
If we’re going to have some fun, we should look good while doing it. In Roycey’s capable hands we’ll be the talk of the EFL.
So that’s it from me. What other jobs around the club would you like to see some of Southend’s 90’s heroes get up to? Let me know on Twitter.
