Gardening is also time Stonecipher gets to spend with loved ones and friends.
“Sometimes, I’m out here in the garden with my grandkids and daughter ... and it’s just a good time to talk,” Stonecipher said. “The best part is having kids out in the garden picking things.”
None of her produce goes to waste. Whatever she doesn’t give away to others, she repurposes, making pepper jelly, relish or birdhouses out of gourds. And her husband makes wine.
Last year, when Stonecipher got sick from a respiratory illness, she couldn’t grow a winter garden.
“I took to other things like painting and making jewelry,” she said. “I just always preoccupied myself with something else.”
Now that she’s recovered, Stonecipher’s labor of love has resurfaced, and she planted marigolds this year. Proudly, she proclaims that she’s “hopelessly in love with plants.”
Stonecipher put up fencing for vines to climb up, and her favorite part is walking under the fencing when it’s covered in green.
