Shaping the Future Ask anyone. BGCD is known as an organization that doesn’t say no. Is there a new sport the kids want to try? Let’s build a program. A neighborhood principal sees his students being shortchanged on enrichment? Let’s create a partnership. A guardian is surprised to learn summer camp plans are made in the winter? Don’t worry, we’ll find a spot. Bricks and mortar, though, eventually have a way of putting a lid on saying yes. The 1970s era Colonel Daniel Marr Clubhouse and the circa 2000 Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center are maxed out on space and present ever diminishing returns on maintenance dollars. With more than 50,000 young people under the age of 18 living within three miles of the club, now isn’t the time to surrender to limits enforced by old buildings. Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester has the opportunity to provide the very best in early education and out-of-school-time programming that is also affordable for the most vulnerable children and youth in our city, while strengthening the safety net that “connected neighborhoods” provide for families. The values of the BGCD experience last a lifetime. But the club must have room to grow.
