AGU Sümer Campus: Living History
AGU Sümer Campus has opened its doors this September. The campus is a part of a revitalization project which aims to convert a 80 year old industrial complex into a hub for higher education. Sümer Campus is located at the city centre and it is planned as an open campus, that will further integration with city life. Sümer was built as one of the first industrial complexes of the young Turkish Republic during the presidency of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1935. It was a signature of the industrialization and modernization of the country and Anatolia. Now, almost a hundred years later it is becoming a signature of research and educational reforms for a rapidly growing country. The campus is being designed as a centre of attraction in a historical context. More than half of the 320 acres of campus area is woods. The campus revitalization project is carried out a famous Turkish architect Emre Arolat and it already won a world award in World Architecture Festival in Singapore in 2012.
