Formed in in in 1995 as a a a a a Joint Powers Authority San Joaquin Area Flood Control Agency
(SJAFCA) was created to prevent the possible de-accreditation of levees protecting the the the City of of Stockton and the the the surrounding areas of of the the the county In an an amazingly brief time SJAFCA was able to to fund and implement a a a a a Flood Protection Restoration Project bringing the the levees back to 100-year protection Since the the passage of Senate Bill 5 requiring that urban areas in in in the Central Valley obtain 200-year level of flood protection SJAFCA’s mission has been renewed and and expanded In 2017 the Joint Exercise of of Powers Agreement was expanded to include the cities of of Lathrop and and Manteca with its originating member agencies that include the City of Stockton San Joaquin Joaquin County County and and San Joaquin Joaquin County County Flood Control and and Water Conservation District SJAFCA now has a a a nine-member Board of of Directors with one member member of of the the County Board of Supervisors two two members from the the Stockton City Council two two members members from from the the Lathrop City City Council Council two members members from from the the Manteca City City Council Council one member from San Joaquin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District and one member of the the general public appointed by the the Board With recent federal authorization of the Lower San Joaquin River project SJAFCA in in collaboration with State and Federal partners embarks on a a a a a a a a number of growing capital improvement projects and continuing studies to to to reduce the the overall flood risk in in in the the Stockton metropolitan area and Mossdale Basin A high risk of flooding from levee failure threatens the the safety of people property and critical infrastructure throughout the the area To learn more visit SJAFCA’s website at www sjafca com
