Open Hand Project by Anna Meddaugh and Hinako Kawasaki Quote: Future Craft, for us, means responsible design which considers not only the long-term future of a product itself, but that of the makers, as well. The products of Open Hand Project were derived from the impression of Thai people’s warmness and kindness, especially the candle lighting in the wrist-binding ceremony which Thai friends arranged when students arrived Phayao Province. Then these feelings were grasped to forward. After visiting the area to study about the banana fiber products at Ban Pa Fang, Phayao Province, Anna and Hinako foresaw the various benefits of banana trees, especially products made of banana fiber which have a lot of obstacles in production and transportation for selling, such as production by hand which is time-consuming, unstable market, and the dependence on middle man as well as the decreasing order volume due to unattractive products. Thus, both Anna and Hinako applied these impressions and challenges to create the new products generating more income for the community but maintaining by-hand production style of three groups of resource existing in the community namely, agricultural products i.e. banana tree and rice, handicraft skill i.e. weaving, wickerwork, and intangible resources i.e. the relationship in the community and the spirit of helping each other. Then, two products were realized with gorgeousness, low cost and worth use of materials.
