[Rupture and Turning Point: The Narrative of Marcio Veloz Maggiolo 1960-1975]
This book studies the narrative of Marcio Veloz Maggiolo 1960- 1975 from literary and interdisciplinary perspectives. Such experimental period in the narrative of this Dominican Republic writer determines the stylistic and conceptual characteristics of his prose, up to date. Moreover, it marks the beginning of a radical change (modernisation) in the narrative of the Dominican Republic. The novels are studied chronologically to assess how style and composition develop in Judas, El buen ladrón, Nosotros los suicidas, La vida no tiene nombre y Los ángeles de Hueso. The novel that crowns this experimental period is De abril en adelante, a major text that incorporates the ‘New Novel’ movement in the literary realm of the country. Rupture and Turning Point also demonstrates in detail how effectively each of Veloz Maggiolo’s novels unveils key issues related to Dominican society, culture, history, politics, and daily life. Through this critical but constructive approach, the writer constantly appeals the reader to become an active and committed agent in his prose.
