The Programme for the Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality for Jamaica (PROMAC)
Reproductive health: The global sustainable development agenda
Reproductive health is a direct measure of a country’s development. It is an important marker of social and economic development, and is central to population and development policy. Reproductive health issues are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women globally. Like its many partners around the globe, Jamaica has lagged behind its commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goals 4 &5. The United Nations and its development partners have pledged to support developing countries, including the African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries to achieve these goals.
Significant global attention has been paid to prematurity as a major contributor to child mortality. Premature births carry a high societal burden which includes long term and lifetime health care costs; disabling conditions, including poor child development and learning outcomes and the associated costs; lost household and labour market productivity and the economic consequences; and family and caregiver costs, including emotional stress for affected families.
In the post-MDG (post 2015) era, the eyes of the world are firmly fixed on a sustainable development agenda with a focus on equitable access to quality services. This agenda gives special attention to maternal, newborn and child health,
The programme is expected to have a significant impact on health care delivery
by supporting the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Jamaica.
