Unlimited unskilled labour and the sex segregation of occupations in Jamaica
Introduction
Studies of occupational sex segregation (OSS) typically look at how females have been kept out of higher paying, more prestigious, “male” professions. Measurements, like the one shown in Figure 1, are then used to document the extent of OSS in the labour force over time. Figure 1 suggests that OSS has been increasing in Jamaica. However, in the developing world, high (or increasing) levels of segregation do not always translate into simple narratives about male domination or female disadvantage. In Jamaica, in particular, certain historical and cultural peculiarities make analyses of OSS misleading, at best.
