H OW did we get halfway through the year?
In my final years of school, each term seems to have flown by
faster and faster. Now, in my final week of school (and, by the time you read this, having finished all of my A Level exams) I cannot believe that I’ve spent two years in the Sixth Form at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, never mind having been at the school for seven years and in education for 14.
It’s an exciting, but also terrifying prospect to be moving on, although the blow is rather cushioned by the long summer holiday ahead of me once my exams are over.
With prom over and the final day just days away as I write this, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect and say thank you to some of the people who have worked with me over the last decade- and-a-half.
Although it seems like yesterday, there are really quite a few differences between my first day of school and my last. On my first day, back in 2004, I put on my best wooden jewellery and fake watch (before being advised by my mum not to wear them) and walked in to school in my bright red tights.
My lunchtimes were spent playing ‘Doctor Who’ with my classmates, some of who haven’t managed to shake me over the years and I am still friends with now.
It is these people I would like to thank first of all, the friends who have seen me through until now; I know that your futures will be everything you want them to be and I feel incredibly lucky to have seen you nearly every day either since 2004 or starting DHFS in 2011.
Young people can get a lot of negative attention in the media and in society, yet I am always astounded by the talent and positivity of the people around me, whether it be raising money for charity or through the arts, as shown by the outstanding contribution of young people to the Dronfield Arts Festival this year.
A particular mention goes to Miranda Walker-Wood, not only for being the most supportive friend a person could wish for, but also for answering the question “what should this month’s article be about?” with “me” every month.
Secondly, I couldn’t write this article without mentioning the teachers who have made me in to the person I am today.
I have been fortunate enough to have been taught by some inspiring people, from my Year 6 teacher who told me she couldn’t wait to see my first magazine article (if she hasn’t seen this over the past six years, I will be thoroughly disappointed) to my English Language teacher, Miss Jacklin, who has somehow been stuck with me in her class since the beginning of GCSE.
Although I cannot mention everybody, the support I have received from my A Level teachers through classes, essays and exam-induced panic has been wonderful and I am very grateful for all of the work.
Finally, thank you to the Sixth Form team for somehow keeping a group of 16-18 year olds relatively sane. We don’t know how you do it.
This article could fill the magazine if I’m not careful so finally, I would like to thank my family for being at all of the parent’s evenings and school shows and helping with exam stress. My school experience would not have been so successful if I didn’t have the fantastic support at home.
I hope that anybody with exams this summer gets the results they are hoping for and I encourage anybody leaving (whether 16 or 18) to reflect on their time at school; it’s a rather nice task for a study break.
