                A PRACTICE FOR EVERYDAY LIFE
This page: “Wallpaper* magazine commissioned us to design the packaging range for its new online store, WallpaperSTORE*, which launched in summer 2015. The range—which encompasses gift and shipping boxes, tissue, tape, gift bags, stickers, document sleeves, and information cards—needed to be suitable for everything from letter openers to large furniture. We used a geometric pattern, derived from the Wallpaper* asterisk, across all materials, screen-printing it onto boxes, bags, tissue and folders and printing it onto tape. A system of sleeves creates a bespoke layered effect; materials such as Kraft cardboard—used to make the boxes—Tyvek and newsprint add to the palette. The colors reference Wallpaper*’s brand guidelines with complementary tones.” Wallpaper*, client.
Right: “In autumn 2015, the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam held Douglas Coupland’s first major solo exhibition in Europe. The show combined Coupland’s own work with loans from his personal collection, creating a rich tapestry of associations and stories. We designed this publication of Coupland’s stories and essays to accompany the exhibition. The typographic cover design references the book’s title, Bit Rot, a term that describes the degeneration of digital software over time. The typography and layouts evoke early computer fonts and displays; the texts, presented in a continuous stream, are visually interrupted by seemingly random changes of typeface, paper stock and glitches.” Douglas Coupland, writer; Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, client.
“Held at Firstsite in Colchester, the exhibition Nigel Henderson and Eduardo Paolozzi: Hammer Prints Ltd 1954–75 explored the history and legacy of Hammer Prints Ltd., a venture established by artists Eduardo Paolozzi and Nigel Henderson in 1954 as a vehicle for their self-declared ‘attack on the craft field.’ The partnership created a series of designs, which were applied to textiles, wallpapers, ceramics and housewares. We reproduced the patterns, gleaned from artwork acetates and archival materials, and restored them in their original colors and scale for the exhibition. Firstsite’s expansive walls provided a blank canvas that we swathed in Hammer Prints Ltd.’s wallpapers. We covered the main hall in a series of graphic cutouts from the artists’ Sea Beasts series, which echoed their experiments with magnification and enlargements and drew visitors through the building to the galleries.” Michelle Cotton, curator; Firstsite, client.
