Sugar, Cont. from page 5
honey provides 21 calories plus trace amounts of vitamin C, magnesium and antioxidants per teaspoon. Honey does con- tain more fructose then table sugar. If you have trouble digesting fructose, honey may cause you to experience gas or bloating in which case you may want to limit or avoid it com- pletely. Do not give honey to children under 2 years of age.
4. Maple syrup
What is it: Sap from the Maple tree that's been boiled until thickened.
Is it better for you? Maple syrup contains minerals like zinc, calcium, riboflavin and magnesium, as well as a range of antioxidants. But you will only get tiny amounts in a spoonful. It is not exactly a health food. Calorie-wise it's about the same as white sugar, and because maple syrup is an equal split of glucose and fructose, your body processes the two sweeten- ers in the same way.
5. Coconut sugar
What is it: Sugar that is made from the sap of the Coconut palm tree.
Is it better for you? Like Maple syrup, Coconut sugar con- tains trace amounts of minerals such as potassium, phospho- rus, magnesium and calcium. Because Coconut sugar contains less fructose than white sugar, your liver metabolizes it in a healthier way. That means less potential to turn into fat. But since Coconut sugar is higher in sucrose, it still raises your blood sugar.
6. Stevia
What is it: To make this sweetener, leaves of the stevia plant are dried, and the concentrated extract is filtered and turned into powder or a liquid. The final product is 300 times sweet than sugar!
Is it better for you? Stevia is probably most known as a natu- ral zero-calorie sweetener, but since it doesn't contain any calories it doesn't deliver any nutrients either. Since there are no calories it has no effect on your blood sugar!
No type of sweetener is a health food. The fact that one con- tains minuscule amounts of nutrients isn't licensed to eat endless amounts of it. Most of us do not eat sugar by its self, the way it impacts your blood sugar depend on other factors. Blood sugar levels are affected by mixtures of foods. It's the whole meal that matters, for example a spoonful of honey in protein rich Greek yogurt will spike your blood sugar less than the sugar in a cookie made with white flour.
If you have a "sweet tooth" that DEMANDS satisfaction, we recommend stevia over all types of sweeteners. Stevia comes in a multitude of flavors and can be used in sparkling water, (cola, root beer, berry flavors), on cereal, in yogurt, and cook- ing, etc. My favorite is English coffee in my decaffeinated cof- fee.
AIH complementary medicine carries a vast variety of Sweet Leaf TM stevia, (pure stevia without sugar added). I also believe we have the largest selection in town thanks to Julie our office manager! If you bring in this article, you will receive $1.00 off of your purchase of any stevia product. (Limit one per person-offer expires May 31, 2016).
