the community they respond. Their sponsorship of the “One Book, One Freeport” shared- reading experience during odd years brings the commu- nity together in a learning experience. It’s “more than books on a shelf” – make sure you take advantage of every- thing it has to offer.
• Arbor Day is celebrated in Illinois on the last Friday of April, this year it is April 22. This observance was intro- duced by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, NE in the 1872. He felt the Nebraska prairie needed more trees to provide windbreakers, hold the moisture in the soil and provide the lumber to build homes and buildings. History indicates that more than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. Over the next 10 years other states adopted Arbor Day and by the early 1880s, it was being observed national- ly. Locally, most schools have tree planting ceremonies. Check with your local school for their celebration.
Planting a tree on this day, weather permitting, is a great way to honor loved ones.
Other observances include:
• April’s Fools Day on April 1
• National Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Day on April 2
• Administrative Professionals (Secretaries) Day on April 27
I hope you take the oppor- tunity to get out and observe the tulips, crocus and daf- fodils as they bloom and we anticipate all the other blooms to come – after the long cold spell winter we had, they are even more beautiful and you need to take advan- tage of the nicer weather.
