THROUGH THE EYES OF AN AFRICAN CHEF
MAMA REFILOE AND THE BAMBANANI CO-OPERATIVE
Mama Refiloe Molefe has magic fingers; everything she plants grows like wildfire. Having been adopted herself, she ended up in farming as a means to feed street children in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD. She started a home crèche, but eventually realised she had to look after and feed as many children as she could.
She leases land from the City of Johannesburg, opposite Ellis Park Rugby Stadium. She is the queen of urban farming. She grows pumpkin and greens of all sorts, including most herbs.
