DESSERTS
TRADITIONALLY, PROCESSED SUGAR WAS NOT PART OF THE AFRICAN DIET. THE ONLY KNOWN SWEETNESS WAS THAT OF NATURAL SUGAR FOUND IN WILD BERRIES, WILD MELONS AND PUMPKINS.
ON COLD DAYS, I WOULD GET HOME FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL AND MY GRANDMOTHER HAD ISIJINGI (PUMPKIN THICKENED WITH A BIT OF MAIZE MEAL) READY TO WARM ME UP. THIS WAS THE ULTIMATE COMFORT FOOD. I HAVE RECREATED HER RECIPE IN THIS SECTION AND HAVE ALSO ADDED SOME FRUIT-BASED DISHES FOR YOU TO ENJOY.
