not meant to be an academic text but rather a personal viewpoint based on 30 years of experience and involvement.
Stone Dynamics Gallery was opened in 1986 to provide an alternative platform for young up-and-coming sculptors. I believe that art is a dynamic force, hence the choice of name. At the time, there were only three other commercial galleries who were seriously providing a place where the artists could be promoted and display and sell their work. Now, 30 years later, these young artists are renowned sculptors whose work sells for thousands of dollars.
Stone Dynamics Gallery is the only one of these that has survived since the 1980s. In fact, it is the longest-standing private Zimbabwe Stone Sculpture gallery worldwide. This survival has been crucial to the artists because they have been able to continue being creative and sculpting while also being able to sell their work and make a living. This book will feature some of these sculptors. Most will be artists who are still active but also others who have sadly passed but whose contribution has been crucial to the development of sculpture in Zimbabwe.

is perhaps the most
important new art form
to emerge from Africa
in this century”
