“He wanted to bring joy and movement into his work and the end result is original, multidimensional sculptures that speak of happiness and fun and are pleasing to the eye.”
DOMINIC BENHURA
Over the past decade, Dominic has established himself as one of the leaders of the art community in Zimbabwe. He is passionate and intelligent and a self-professed workaholic who says his children provide him with endless ideas.
He was born in 1968 in Murewa, not far from the capital of Harare, and began sculpting as a boy under the instruction of his cousin, world-renowned sculptor Tapfuma Gutsa. He likes to experiment with mixed media, blending stone and metal in his sculptures because he felt that most of the early sculptures he saw were static. He wanted to bring joy and movement into his work and the end result is original, multidimensional sculptures that speak of happiness and fun and are pleasing to the eye.
Authenticity and integrity are very important to Dominic and he has been a powerful voice for the maintenance of high standards. This support has been invaluable because it has echoed and reinforced my own crusade to ensure that an artist’s work is protected and customers are assured of buying original work.
The popularity of his sculpture, his work ethic and his rigorous schedule of exhibitions around the world has made Dominic one of the most influential and sought-after artists in Zimbabwe. For me, his veracity is impeccable and commendable and it is a true pleasure to represent him and to work with him.
