OKAVANGO
Tourism is thriving in Northern Botswana, and I for one certainly do not miss the days
of game drives in the Moremi hounded by Tsetse! One resource, however, can never be
overutilised as long as the Okavango remains intact: its ability to rejuvenate the human
spirit. John Muir said “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray
in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike.”
For me, the Okavango is that place, and I am reminded of that every time I hear an
African Fish Eagle call. ■ DB25
ADAM HEDGES
Born and raised in Kenya, Adam
started his career in the safari
business driving ex- army Bedford
trucks through the northern deserts
of Kenya on what was called “the
toughest bus ride in the world”. The
Turkana Bus. After working for his
father leading safaris throughout
East Africa, he moved to Maun in
1983 and started his own business,
Capricorn Safaris. He worked as an
executive committee member of
HATAB in the mid 90s, and together
with the Botswana Department
of Wildlife and National Parks
was instrumental in developing
the Mobile operator sites in the
National Parks.
SHANE HEDGES
Shane developed a passion for the
African wilderness at an early age.
By the time he was two weeks old
he was already “on safari” with his
parents who run a safari business
in the Okavango “This passion
has been the constant throughout
my life, and I would like nothing
more than to be able to share the
privilege of experiencing the African
bush with future generations.”
His passion is also evident in his
photography, where his work as
a safari guide offers him plenty of
subject material!
Above: The delta is a tapestry of life and light and very much a spiritual place for those who
venture here. To see extraordinary wildlife like giraffe, brings to the fore the spirit of the
Okavango. Long may it last.
