Flying high as Zimbabwe opens up for business
A new terminal at Victoria Falls, potential to expand Harare airport facilities and more regional and international links are on the horizon
Within six months, the airport at Victoria Falls will triple annual capacity to 1.5 million passengers with a new control tower, international terminal and runway, a development that signals potential for the destination to become a regional hub within southern Africa.
Of particular note is the extension of the runway by March to cater for the largest wide-bodied jets, rather than its current
restriction to smaller aircraft, exciting the interest of global carriers, according to David Chawota, ceo and general manager of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ).
“Airlines such as Qatar Airways, British Airways, Etihad, Emirates, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines have indicated they will be monitoring the market and will advise when they are in a position to commence services,” he said.
