   The wonders of the wild
As well as nature in the raw, Zimbabwe offers something for every visitor – from adventure at Victoria Falls to golf with views, breath-taking sunsets, mountains, lakes and plains, and a unique culture and history
Since the Victoria Falls were first ‘discovered’ in 1855 by Scottish explorer and missionary Dr David Livingstone, his remark that “scenes so lovely must have been gazed
upon by angels in their flight” has echoed around the world, and the site provides a magnet for tourists, incentive and conference visitors, honeymooners and adrenalin junkies.
The facts are simply amazing: estimated at 1.7km wide with a height of 108 metres, it is the world’s largest sheet of falling water and more than twice the size of Niagara in the United States – as well as being one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and locally known as Mosi-oa- Tunya (‘the smoke that thunders’).
Compelling in itself, the area boasts up to 50 different activities for both individuals and groups, available in the town, on the river, in the bush or in the air, many located within a 15-minute radius of the Falls and others such as Hwange and Lake Kariba within an hour’s flight.
There are zip wires and flying fox adventures above the river gorge; the infamous bungee from the Victoria Falls Bridge; white water rafting, more sedate kayaking and canoeing; up close and personal encounters with elephants, lions and more; dawn safaris and sunset cruises; bush barbecues and silver service dinners, and multi-destination itineraries in to neighbouring Zambia and Botswana.
