Is listed as the 1000th UNESCO World Heritage Site.
TSODILO HILLS
Over 4 500 rock paintings, many executed by the San people. One of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world, now a World Heritage Site. Described by Laurens van der Post as “the Louvre of the desert”.
GCWIHABA CAVES AND AHA HILLS Gcwihaba Caves
with stalactites and stalagmites, are found in the ancient dolomite hills straddling the Botswana-Namibia border. The ancient hills rise suddenly out of the flat Kalahari. Numerous other caves have been discovered at Gcwihaba and Koanaka.
MAKGADIKGADI/NXAI PANS NATIONAL PARK Huge salt pans visible from space – the remnants of the
super lake dried up thousands of years ago, leaving crystalline salts glittering on the pans. A chance to experience the sheer scale and vastness of the Kalahari.
ZIMBABWE
KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK
The first of the
new ‘peace parks’.
It straddles the Botswana and South African frontiers in the extreme southwest
of Botswana. Famous for its red sands and black maned lions. Access in Botswana is from Makopong or Mabuasehube, where there are a series of interesting pans.
GABORONE
The capital: centre
of government, commerce and industry. A chance to meet the Batswana people, to shop in their markets and
see their art in the museum galleries. Weekend excursions to Mokolodi, Gaborone Game Reserve and the Gaborone Dam.
CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE
One of the largest protected areas in
the world. Deception Valley, in its northern reaches, is an ancient riverbed which, after good rains, attracts sizeable wildlife populations. Adjoining Khutse Game Reserve comprises a series of pans at which wildlife gathers.
