 THE DESTINATION
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
One of the examples of a peace park, operated jointly as a single ecological unit by the Botswana and South African authorities, the Kgalgadi Transfrontier Park occupies 38,000 sq km at the south-east border, with three-quarters of the land lying within Botswana.
Largely part of the Kalahari Desert, the area is characterised by red sand dunes, salt pans and dry river beds, with underground water flows providing sustenance for grasses and trees – feeding the herds of wildebeest and other antelope which then attract raptors and predators, including the famed black-maned lion.
Home to an estimated 200 species of birds, an additional bonus for visitors is the plentiful game viewing and beauty of the landscape during the summer months between January
and April, but with limited access and accommodation, the park is probably least suited to corporate incentives or events.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary
Around 300km north-east from Gaborone off the Francistown road, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary was set up in 1992 to protect Botswana’s endangered rhinos and provide a focal point for conservation education.
Covering around 85 sq km centred on the Serwe Pan, the sanctuary provides a home for both black and white rhino, plus more than 30 other animal species as well as 230 bird species.
For a conference with a difference, there is a multi- purpose hall with capacity for up to 100 people, plus restaurant and pool facilties.
