And now a word about Thai massage. It is one of the reasons I moved here. A good Thai massage is the most heavenly thing I have ever experienced. You go in, take off your clothes and put on pajamas, taking a while to figure out how to tie the drawstring on the pants. Then you lie down on your back and the masseuse comes in, places her/his hands together in a wai, and then starts with your feet. You are on a mattress on the floor so the masseuse can use the leverage of their entire body to lean into you. Some of them are incredibly strong and don't know it, so you have to ask them to ease up. The Thai word for "softer" is "bow bow" and I learned that in a hurry.
They massage your entire body, bending limbs in ways you never thought possible and in time it will be like a meditation where your thoughts fade away and you fall into a state of peace. Halfway through they have you roll onto your stomach and start with the feet again, working up through your body. Finally, they sit behind you, cross their legs and you rest your head on a pillow in their lap while they do more on your neck and head. Then they sit you up and stretch your arms and neck and then with a few cupped hands taps to the back you are done. It is the absolute best my body has ever felt. Two hours of magic.
There are all kinds of massages. Oil, hot stones, foot massage, head and shoulder massage, and so on. They are all good. You can't go wrong.
And yes, you can get "happy ending" massages. In fifteen years I've been offered them twice and both times they caught me by surprise. I declined.
You see? Walking around Chiangmai brings back all kinds of memories.
