PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN SOMERSET AND WILTSHIRE TAKE PART IN PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST.
The 3rd annual Public Speaking Contest took place on
Friday 8th March 2024 for Catholic Primary Schools in Somerset and Wiltshire which is sponsored by the West Somerset Circle of the Catenian Association for the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust. Ten Schools took part and the quality of the presentation belie the age of
contestants. Teams of 5 pupils spoke for up to 8 minutes on any one of the seven Principles of Catholic Teaching. Examples of subjects chosen included: - Respect for the Human Person, Work for the Common Good, Observe the Principle of Subsidiary, Respect The Worker and pursue Peace and Care for the Poor. Marks were awarded for Delivery, Oral Skills, Content, Visual Aida and
Teamwork.
The Contest was opened by Helen Taylor the CEO of Dunstan CET with a welcome and the importance of being able to
state your case in public. The schools taking part: -

The three judges were impressed by the quality of the presentations and agreed that the pupils had significantly raised the standard demonstrating, increased confidence, the ability to get their point across, analysis of the subject (so better knowledge) self esteem and commitment to complete the task. The winning school was St. Joseph & St. Teresa from Wells –The second time they have won the contest.
Helen Taylor presented the successful Pupils with an engraved shield, a book token for £20 as well as a winner's certificate. The other 45 contestants were awarded a certificate In recognition of their participation.
Michael Keenan a Director and President of West Somerset Circle of the Catenian Association gave the vote of thanks complementing them on their presentations and hoped to see some of them again at the National Contest held in Manchester for Catholic Secondary schools.
