I play premier league soccer; I have two rescue cats, Lunar and Stella; I go for bush walks with my husband to take photographs of wildlife.
Fave snack or hot / cold beverage?
Oat milk latte (classic millennial)
Five things people don’t know about you?
Tough one. When I get the time, I play video games but I must complete the game 100%; talk to every PC character, finish all side missions and quests. I currently have 2 games which I have been trying to finish for over a year now; -I love anime; -I walk my cats and have trained them to do tricks such as high 5 and play dead;-I have the ability to fall asleep anywhere and can fall asleep in 8 secs (my husband has timed it);- I shaved my head for the Worlds Greatest Shave in 2018.
The last late night I had was?
A few weeks ago some friends came over for dinner and a movie. We ended up watching Zack Snyder’s Justice League which kept us up till early hours of the morning.
Best Childhood Memory:
Going to my grandparents house and swimming in their pool in the hot Australian summers.
My First Day as a (Trainee) Perfusionist was:
Information overload. I’d been exposed to operating theatres before but seeing the heart stop on purpose isn’t something that you can easily explain to your spouse when you get home. Not only was it thrilling to see, trying to grasp all technical and biological aspects of the whole process was mind boggling.
What drew me to Perfusion:
I never wanted to grow up and have a “desk job”; I wanted to be hands with the ability to challenge myself mentally. When I was introduced into perfusion I was drawn to it’s fascinating and unique area in the medical industry which allows me to be a part of a team that makes a difference to someone’s life.
My favourite little known perfusion fact:
There is a team in Japan that has managed to repair the mitral valves in dogs with mitral valve disease. Sydney Veterinary University is trying to develop their own program to help save puppy and dogs from this common heart condition.
My favourite area of interest within Perfusion:
I’m currently interested in the pharmacology behind perfusion and how it all works.
Where do you see the future of perfusion? How or what would you like to see?
The next generation of heart lung machines are going to be sleek and modernised. I have the advantage of training on both the Sorin S5 and the Quantum machines. The next generation will bring in newer technologies which assist in initiating and weaning off bypass pass. As well as the ease of running a pump without even having to touch a clamp. I’m eager to see what the next generation heart lung machines will bring to the operating room and if there will be any major developments in the way heart lung machines are run.
Favourite memory from a conference / speaker / most inspirational perfusion -related seminar you went to:
ABM Bloodline - Hayden Dando. His passion and energic way to convey blood management is something out of a Ted Talk. He manages to captivate the audience with everything he presents.
Name something you appreciate about the team you work in:
I work with an amazing team. They are really supportive with balancing study and work. They are amazing teachers who are also happy and patient to explain things to me so that I can have a better understanding.
