   White garment
A white baptismal garment symbolises that your child has ‘put on’ Christ (Galatians 3:27).
White is a sign of innocence, purity, freshness. Clothing your child in white expresses the dignity and beauty of new life of Christ. In the baptism ceremony the celebrant prays:
N., you have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ.
See in this white garment an outward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of heaven.
All: Amen. Reflection
There are many beautiful passages in the bible that speak of being ‘clothed’ in God’s goodness and glory. For example the prophet Isaiah says:
“My whole being will exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness.” Isaiah 61:10
Prayer tip: At home, as you dress your child for various occasions, pray a brief prayer such as: “Lord God, clothe our child in your goodness and grace.”
You have become a new
creation, and have
clothed yourself in Christ.

Spirituality in the home
Start a family tradition
Is your baby’s baptismal garment a family heirloom? Tell the
story behind it. Who made it? Who first wore it? How many generations has it touched?
Storytelling like this is part of passing on faith at home.
If the baptismal garment is not part of your family customs, why not create one? Make or buy
a white garment which will be worn one day at the baptism of your child’s grandchild.
Note: some parishes supply a simple white stole to place over the child during the ceremony.
