Q AND A – PERFUSION PROFILES
Holly Gleave
  Hospital and State/Country:
Townsville University Hospital, Far North Queensland, Australia
Hobbies, things to do outside of work / Significant others:
Main hobby would be my daily Wordle, Quordle and Octordle challenge with my dad, with a close second and third as cooking and training
Fave snack or hot / cold beverage:
Coffee - Hario cold brew before training and then a little guy espresso to kick into gear for the day
3 things people don’t know about you (Violent sneezer? Secret penchant for banjo music?):
I use to keep bees in Sydney, I only learnt how to ride a bike as an adult and I converted a VW van during lockdown to go on road trips
The last late night I had....(from here on can be longer responses):
Our friend's wedding in Portugal - they certainly know how to throw a party!
Best Childhood Memory:
Summers spent at crescent head on the NSW north coast with my family
My First Day as a Perfusionist:
It was just Helen and I and it felt like drinking from a fire hydrant!
What drew me to Perfusion:
I was an anaesthetic nurse at St Vincent’s, Sydney, and then went on to heart lung transplant coordinating. I got to see the amazing job the boys at Vinnies had and even knowing the crazy hours of the job I went and started applying for trainee positions. Third time's a charm and I landed the position at Townsville and moved up to the sunny far north.
My favourite area of interest within Perfusion:
Dialysis on bypass for end stage renal patients, especially as we have large indigenous population in our catchment
How or what would you like to see?
I’d love to go back in the future on a heart donor DCD run to shadow the team at St Vincent’s and to understand more about priming, managing and troubleshooting of the rig.
Name something you appreciate about the team you work in:
I’m lucky enough to work in a wonderful all female team who have been so supportive of me while finding the sweet spot balancing clinical work and undertaking the MUSC masters. I should also do a shout out for Helen- she is an amazing baker and I appreciate all the sweet treats, especially snickerdoodles.
